THE LONDON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE (Incorporated),
69, Cannon Street,
E.C.4.
2nd December, 1938.
SECTION.
sir,
Members of the Section have reported
to the Chamber delays and irregularities in the
mails from Canton which are, apparently, due to
Japanese interference with the steamer sailings
on the Pearl River. An example is quoted of mail
which left Canton on October 18th and took seven
days in transit to Hong Kong, from which point it
reached England within eight days. It does not
appear that the situation has improved materially
since that date.
I should be glad to know whether this matter
18 already receiving the attention of His Majesty's
Government and, if not, whether representations wi 11
be made to the Japanese authorities with a view to
facilitating the forwarding of the mails from Canton.
Yours faithfully,
(Sgd.) A.de V. Leigh,
Secretary.
The Under-Secretary of State,
Foreign Office,
S.V.1.
